The third eye chakra is located in the forehead between the two physical eyes and is coloured indigo. It governs the pituitary gland, which is the master gland that controls the functions of the other glands in the body. It is called the third eye because it is the chakra of creative visualisation, as well as clairvoyance and intuition, and we develop it through meditation. It is through this chakra that we use our minds to create our mental, emotional, and spiritual realities, all of which ultimately have an affect on our physical reality, enabling us to transform our lives. We also develop the qualities of wisdom and discernment through this chakra. It provides us the energy to awaken our minds and to question our values, and to evaluate whether what we have been brought up to believe is true or false.
If it is blocked, we do not have the discipline to finish tasks and carry out projects to completion, we fear success and set our sights too low, and we use rational and analytical thinking without looking at the emotional or spiritual aspects. However, if it is too open we can become dogmatic, arrogant and authoritarian.
The parts of the body it relates to is vision, particularly the left eye, the nose and the sense of smell, the left ear, the teeth, the lower brain stem, the nervous system and spine. Physical ailments due to blockage in this chakra include blindness, deafness, depression, nervous breakdown, anxiety and learning difficulties.
Good essential oils for this chakra include juniper, which is good for exhaustion and nervous burnout, rosemary, lemon, lavender, and basil.
Amethyst is the best crystal for the third eye chakra.
