The throat chakra is located in the throat and is coloured blue. It is the chakra of communication and manifestation, and is all about how we express ourselves, and how we speak our truth. It is associated with the thyroid gland.
Blockages can occur in this chakra when we do not speak up for ourselves and express our needs. So many of us are afraid to say how we feel because we are worried about what others may think of us. When we do this we actually “swallow” the words that we are afraid to speak, and the unspoken words accumulate in our throat chakras and ultimately result in illnesses such as sore throats, tonsillitis and laryngitis. When I was a child, I was always getting sore throats, and at one point I had chronic tonsillitis. Looking back, I can see that I was holding words back and keeping quiet in order to keep the peace and keep out of trouble, and when I grew older, and became less afraid of speaking out, these illnesses disappeared.
Another thing that often happens is that we may say something that we do not mean in order to create a good impression. This is actually being dishonest and insincere, and is not conducive to free flowing energy in the throat chakra. Being two faced and gossiping about others, and speaking about doing something but not following through and actually doing it are also negative activities which can impact on this chakra.
The best way of looking after the throat chakra and keeping it open is to let go of our fears about what others may think of us. This is not easy, as most of us, especially women, have been conditioned all our lives to please others and keep up appearances in order to be accepted in whatever culture we have been brought up in.
Another good way of helping to keep the throat chakra open is singing. This really works well, and feels great, especially if you sing with joy and sing from the heart. When I first started my spiritual training, my throat chakra was really badly blocked, and Margaret told me to get a piece of blue lace agate, lie on my back with it on my throat and to sing the word “aahh”. I had a small goitre, and after doing this for a week or so, the goitre had disappeared!
Other crystals for the throat chakra are lapis lazuli, sodalite, and azurite. Turquoise is a wonderful stone for encouraging communication.
Essential oils for the throat chakra include sandalwood, German chamomile (which is blue, like the chakra), bergamot, tea tree, eucalyptus, cypress, frankincense, and jasmine.
